A US drone strike in Syria is said to have targeted on Thursday the “Jihadi John,” the infamous masked Islamic State executioner known for his brutal beheading of several Western hostages.

From the initial report it is unclear whether he, Briton Mohammed Emwazi, has been killed in the strike. Pentagon is still working to determine it.

According to Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook, the drone struck the Syrian city of Raqqa, which is currently the de facto capital of Islamic State.

Cook said, “We are assessing the results of tonight’s operation and will provide additional information as and where appropriate.”

Even though there is no confirmation as yet from the British defense ministry or 10 Downing Street, BBC reports citing senior military source there was a high degree of certainty the beheader may had been hit by the drone.

However, NBC News report, citing a senior US counter-terrorism official, that there was no definitive proof whether the notorious ISIS terrorist was killed in the strike.

British Prime Minister spokeswoman said an official statement would be released later today.

Emwazi is in his mid-20s and was dubbed as Jihadi John by the British press. In February he was identified as the masked knife-wielding man in an execution video.
