Nagaland Businesses Extend Shopping Restrictions Amid Government Inaction

Amidst unresolved grievances with the state authorities, businesses in Nagaland have decided to extend the ongoing shutter down, with limited shopping hours offered on April 29 for essential purchases.

The Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CNCCI) has announced the continuation of the indefinite state-wide shutter down due to the lack of response from state authorities. However, to provide some relief, there will be a six-hour window on April 29, from 12 noon to 6 p.m., allowing the procurement of essential items.

CNCCI’s decision, led by President Dr. Khekugha Muru and General Secretary Dr. Seyievilie Mor, is in response to the sudden district shutdowns without prior public notice. District Chambers of Commerce & Industry (CCIs) are urged to facilitate this limited shopping period while preparing for a potential extended shutdown until their demands are addressed.

In Chümoukedima district, the Chümoukedima Chamber of Commerce & Trade Association (CCCTA) clarified that the indefinite shutter down remains in effect. Essential shops will briefly open on April 29 for stocking, with the strike resuming on April 30, supporting CNCCI’s call against government inaction.

The Kohima Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) will relax the indefinite shutter down on April 29 for restocking essential items, as per CNCCI’s directives. Further updates will be provided by KCCI on the ongoing situation.

Meanwhile, the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) presented a five-point demand charter to the state government, seeking clarification on multiple issues affecting businesses, including taxation by Naga Political Groups (NPGs), raids, and extortion incidents.

DCCI President Akashe Zhimomi stressed the need for a written response from the government to resolve these issues. Despite assurances from local authorities, the DCCI remains firm on continuing the shutter down until their demands are addressed.

In response to public inconvenience, the Petroleum Dealers Association of Dimapur has agreed to reopen fuel outlets from April 27, upon DCCI’s request. They remain vigilant and prepared to support another shutter down if necessary.
