There will be no firing until Eid al-Adha in Afghanistan. President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has appealed to the Taliban in a televised address on Sunday. He declared it as a conditional ceasefire which will be effective from Monday.

The Afghanistan president said “(truce would be) until the prophet’s birthday provided that the Taliban reciprocate.”

Prophet Muhammad’s birthday will be celebrated on November 21 this year in the country.

Sunday was the 99th Independence Day of Afghanistan and on the occasion he was addressing to the nation from the iconic Darul Aman palace in capital city Kabul. Ghani said the decision of ceasefire was reached following consultation with several Islamic soldiers worldwide and segments of the Afghan society.

However, there was no reciprocal information from the Taliban but the outfit said in a statement to be releasing hundreds of prisoners.

Neighboring country Pakistan welcomed the decision of Ghani though it was only limited to the Taliban and not other outfits like the ISIS.

In an official statement the country said, “Pakistan fully supports all such efforts that contribute to achieving durable stability and lasting peace in Afghanistan… The people of Afghanistan deserve it. Coinciding with the Independence Day of Afghanistan, the announcement has an even greater significance.”

The last ceasefire decision of the government was in June this year, during the Eid al-Fitr holiday. It was accepted by the Taliban but rejected for any extension.

Since the end of combat mission by NATO and US in 2014 the Afghan security forces have struggled to battle terror organizations like ISIS and the Taliban .
