Train Accident In Belgium; 3 Dead, 40 Injured

At least three people have been killed and about forty others are injured in Belgium after the collision of a passenger train with a freight train on Sunday night.

The accident took place in eastern Liege province at Hermalle-sous-Huy, on the banks of the Meuse river.

Mayor of the town said the collision was very violent. The passenger train crashed at the back of the freight train at high speed, at about 90 km/h. Both the trains were running on the same track. The accident occurred shortly after 11 p.m. local time.

All the passengers were freed from the wrecked vehicles by 2 a.m. Monday. Some of the survivors were taken to a nearby abbey while others were moved to local sports center to offer psychological counseling.

An eyewitness said the train carriages were destroyed completely.

According to Belgium’s rail infrastructure manager Infrabel, the passenger train was on its route from Liege to Namur.

Infrabel and SNCB, the national rail operator, has issued a statement saying, “Two of the six carriages derailed and are lying on the tracks.”

SNCB later said, “All our services are mobilized, and are completely cooperating with rescue services.”
