The first quake was of 5.5-magnitude and its epicenter was about 9 kilimeters away, south-southwest of the town of Visso at around 7 p.m. local time.

The affected areas are full of narrow roads that links small stone villages. Mudslides are being feared by rescue workers as heavy equipment could not be brought.

One man suffered a heart attack after the quake, reports a local media.

Residents were not certain what could happen next and were worried bigger tremor could trigger causing more damage.

According to US Geological Survey (USGS), both the earthquakes were shallow.

TV footage showed several stone buildings have been heavily damaged in the town.

On 24 August about 270 people were killed in a 6.2-magnitude earthquake in Visso, about 50 miles north of Amatrice and 110 miles northeast of Rome.
