The greatest physicist of our time, Stephen Hawking, passed away early hour of Wednesday. He was 76.

His children, Lucy, Robert and Tin, released a statement mentioning, “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years.”

Hawking was a man of great humor and his book A Brief History of Time became best seller.

Born on 8 January 1942 in Oxford as Stephen William Hawking to research biologist father Frank and Isobel Hawking, he grew up in London and St Albans. He went to Cambridge for postgraduate research in cosmology after getting a first-class degree in physics from Oxford.

At the age of 21, when he was at Cambridge, he was diagnosed with a form of motor neurone disease and doctors assumed his would live for just about two more years. However, he overcame all the odds and lived for more than half a century.

His disease progressed very slowly, below expectation. He married Jane Hawking in 1965 and had three children. However, the two divorced in 1995.

Hawking married Elaine Mason in 1995 and both separated in 2006.

The first major breakthrough in career came in 1970 when he and Roger Penrose applied mathematics of black holes to the universe and developed the theory of a singularity that was in our distant past, which was a point from which came the big bang.

He touched to stardom with his book A Brief History of Time, which was on a bestsellers list for an unprecedented 237 weeks, in 1988.
