In recent times, the concept of travelling for wellness has gained momentum, especially in the wake of the pandemic. Defined by the Wellness Tourism Association as travel that supports and enhances one’s sense of well-being, wellness tourism has seen a significant surge in interest. Rather than viewing holidays as a once-a-year indulgence, the focus is now shifting towards incorporating rest and relaxation into our daily lives.

According to data from the Global Wellness Institute, the global wellness tourism market is expected to reach a staggering $1 trillion by 2024. Alongside sustainable travel, another emerging trend in wellness tourism is slow travelling. This approach encourages travellers to immerse themselves in one destination rather than rushing from place to place, embracing the joy of missing out (JOMO) and savoring the present moment.

The growing popularity of slow travel is evident from the increasing number of searches for terms like “staycation hotel” and “slow life” on platforms like Pinterest. To embark on a slow travel journey, Hyderabad-based lifestyle coach Priya Rajiv Mohan recommends choosing culturally rich destinations, opting for eco-friendly accommodations, and using slower modes of transportation such as trains or buses. She emphasizes the importance of exploring fewer places in order to foster a deeper connection with each location.

Delhi-based entrepreneur Kushal Jain recently experienced the benefits of slow travel during a staycation in Nainital, Uttarakhand. A staycation, a blend of “stay” and “vacation,” offers the perfect opportunity to unwind in familiar surroundings without the stress of planning an elaborate trip. It allows individuals to reset from the daily grind while enjoying the comforts of a resort or luxury accommodation in their own city or nearby suburbs.

Slow travel also involves engaging in activities that promote relaxation and personal growth, such as spa treatments, wellness workshops, and nature walks. Holiday retreats and vacation homes are increasingly offering immersive experiences aimed at helping guests disconnect from external distractions and reconnect with their inner selves.

Dharana at Shillim Pune, for example, offers a variety of physical and mental wellness programs, including yoga sessions, guided meditations, nature walks, and cooking classes. According to Srikant Peri, general manager of Dharana at Shillim, the goal is to encourage individuals to step away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and prioritize their well-being.
