The wait for modular Project Ara smartphone project will remain a wait forever as Google has suspended it even though earlier this year in May it claimed to be shipping to developers this fall.

Google spokesperson said the decision to end to project comes from hardware chief Rick Osterioh of the company.

Osterioh is lately reported to be putting all the efforts in streamlining the disorganized product lineup.

Whatever be the reason of suspension but it is a sad turn of events for fans.

The ambitious modular concept was put forth by the search giant’s experimental ATAP group led by former chief Regina Dugan.

Dugan is now with Facebook. He left Google earlier this year.

The Ara team first developed a concept design some three years ago. The developers reimagined cell phone device as a series of smaller bricks similar to LEGO toys and users can change various aspects of it frequently to suit taste and style.

Last year the team had scheduled a pilot test of it in Puerto Rico, but the plan was shelved to bring down cost and also to solve some of the technical hurdles.

Reuters report Google may license the technology to third parties.
