Meanwhile, Brazil is still investigating potential link between the mosquito-borne Zika infections and thousands of microcephaly cases in which new born babies have abnormally small head size resulted with developmental problems.

Until now the link between the two has not been confirmed and in California no such cases have been yet recorded.

Not much is still known about Zika virus and hence there is no available vaccine. Moreover, most of the infected does not show symptoms of mild illness, fever, rash and red eyes.

A government data reveals 25,645 people in Colombia have been infected with it and among those 3,177 are pregnant women.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said, “The projection is that we could end up having 600,000 cases.”

He added the government will be working to fight mosquitoes and help families to get rid of stagnant water in their homes. Pregnant women can also get access to much-restricted abortion services.

As of now women struggle getting abortion even meeting strict legal requirements.

Colombian health minister Alejandro Gaviria has confirmed three deaths have taken place due to Zika virus.
