Instagram has reached a new milestone. It has hit the 400 million monthly active users mark and this is much more than Twitter, which has little more than three million active users a month.

The social platform took just nine months to add 100 million users. Among the new celeb members in these period are soccer star David Beckham and former athlete Caitlyn Jenner.

In a blog post the photo-sharing app firm said 75 percent of its users are from outside United States and more than half of the new 100 million users live in Europe and Asia. Indonesia, Japan and Brazil are the three countries with most Instagrammers.

Facebook acquired Instagram in 2012 and now it seems monetizing is one of the primary focus. Several features have lately been introduced that suggests so including sponsored posts and targeted ads.

It is estimated the ad revenue from the platform will reach $600 this year. It is also predicted to jump by at least 146 percent in 2016 and to reach $1.48 billion.

In 2017 the Instagram ad revenue will be equal to 14 percent of the total mobile ad revenue of Facebook.

Meanwhile, it is also reported Twitter is struggling to generate more new users to the platform.
