US President Barack Obama has reminded the people in his Thanksgiving message the deep immigration history of America. He appealed everyone to show generosity to the Syrian refugees as men and women of the continent did in helping the Mayflower Pilgrims in 1620 that led to the nation’s founding.

The HHS Office of Refugee Resettlement had sent a letter to state officials saying blocking the resettlement of refugees is something not legal and it should be done irrespective of sex, nationality, religion, race or political opinion.

About thirty state governors have recently hinted to block refugees from settling in their states.

Reciprocating to it the letter said the refugees are protected by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Meanwhile, Obama said he is deeply touched by the generosity of those who have written to him to be opening up their homes for the refugees fleeing from the Islamic State.

Earlier this month on November 19 the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan bill that requires the FBI director to certify a background investigation for the refugees from Syria or Iraq who are seeking shelter in America.

Obama said all the refugees will undergo the highest security checks.
