Russian President Vladimir Putin said Trump will be his guest in his country and White House on the other hand reciprocated the idea positively amid lingering criticism over Helsinki summit.

Putin is currently on a South Africa visit for an economic conference and added that appropriate conditions were required for another summit for talks between the two nuclear powers.

He was refering to the political uproar and criticisms in the US following meeting of the two leaders last week in Helsinki summit.

White House said their president was interested for next summit to improve ties between the two countries as relations have worsened in recent years.

According to White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders, “President Trump looks forward to having President Putin to Washington after the first of the year, and he is open to visiting Moscow upon receiving a formal invitation.”

US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis said there has been no decision taken yet and Trump has been widely criticized in the country following the Helsinki summit. He is alleged to have failed to confront the Russian leader publicly over the country’s interference in 2016 US election.

Apart from the election interference, the military support of Moscow in 2015 of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian war and their 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine have sourced relations between the two powers.

The White House had earlier this week postponed invitation until 2019.
