Backed by Russian airstrikes, the Syrian government forces advanced to the northern region of the country Thursday in the city of Aleppo that was almost surrounded by rebels and thousands of civilians have been displaced.

On Wednesday the United Nations suspended a new round of international peace talks as until now no progress has been seen toward ending the five-year-old civil war in the country.

Also, Saudi Arabia has shown its willingness to support the ground operation with its army against the Islamic State fighters provided the United States along with some other nations agrees to initiate such campaign.

As of now the United States, Saudi Arabia and couple of other nations are backing the rebels. Russia is airstriking in support of Assad government and same is doing Iran by sending ground forces in Syria.

Aleppo was the largest commercial center in Syria before the war and gain of the territory means a big blow for the rebels.

The Russian airstrikes since September last year has helped the government in stabilizing its position and also in advancing towards the lost territories. As an aftermath pressure on Assad has been diminished too to negotiate compromisingly.

Since 2012 Aleppo has been divided into two parts – the government and rebel-controlled zone.
