Today’s issue was one of the longest-lasting in the history of about ten years of the micro-blogging site.

Regular outages are common with the messaging platform and it was most during the initial years of Twitter. In 2008 the site crashed under the weight of traffic during an Apple live event.

However, the issues became less frequent in recent years and last time such problem was seen in 2014 when Twitter was down for about 45 minutes.

Twitter acknowledged the problem at around 9 a.m. (GMT) via its status page. It also emailed the same to several media houses across the world.

Meanwhile, the Twitter homepage displayed an error message mentioning the site was down due to technical problem.

Just couple of days ago the shares of Twitter fell to an all-time low of $18.68 on the Nasdaq. If such outages become common again it will knock the confidence of investors.

Twitter issued its IPO in late 2013 with a price of $26.

Founded in 2006, Twitter made revenue of $569m in the quarter to September 30. It also reported 320 million monthly average users.
