Russian warplanes bombed last month a secret CIA-linked military base in Syria that was used by elite American and British forces. It is said to be a part of a campaign the put pressure on the White House for closer cooperation in the Syrian skies.

The US military and intelligences officials disclosed the bombing lately and a related news carried out by The Wall Street Journal. The report revealed the White House and State Department persued a compromise even though some forces could have been killed and relationships between the two nations have been dampened.

Just last week a pact was agreed between the two nations to target airstrikes against Al-Qaeda affiliate in Nusra Front.

The WSJ added bombing on the airbase occurred on June 16. The US and rebel officials claim a Russian plane was tracked heading toward the base and then dropped a cluster bomb.

It is further reported the US central command air operations in Qatar called the air campaign of Russia in Syria’s Latakia region to tell them not to attack the base.

About 90 minutes later the Russian forces struck again and the pilots didn’t respond to the calls made by US using frequencies. Four rebels were killed in the attacks.

Russian officials claim to have thought the target was an Islamic State facility.
