41 Zika Virus Cases Confirmed In Singapore

The ministry released a press statement that read, “They are not known to have traveled to Zika-affected areas recently, and are thus likely to have been infected in Singapore.”

Most of the Zika virus victims in the city are foreign construction workers and all the cases were from Aljuneid Crescent neighbourhood. Officials have warned the virus may spread further as some of the victims either live or work in other parts of the city.

As of now there is no vaccine for the virus and there is no specific medication too that can treat it. The virus is linked to serious birth defects.

The first imported case was reported earlier this year in May in Singapore. It was said a man returned from Brazil with symptoms of Zika virus.

The Zika virus is circulating in about 58 countries and territories across the world, reveals data from WHO and Centers for Disease Control, including Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Last Thursday Hong Kong too reported its first Zika virus imported case after a 38-year-old woman returned from Caribbean.

WHO earlier had suggested pregnant women not to visit those countries or territories where Zika virus has been circulating as it is linked with birth defects.
