Arrested Drug Trafficker At Lagos Airport Blames Nigeria’s Economic Recession

In attempt to drug exporting two traffickers were arrested Friday at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA).

One of the drug traffickers blame the current economic recession in Nigeria for choosing the wrong path to earn money. He is identified as 59-year-old contractor, Joseph Oparaji Okechukwu.

The second arrested man is 41-year-old safety officer in Qatar, Austine Ikenna Nnaji. He said was unware about the luggage content and claims to have received it from a friend at the airport.

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mitchel Ofoyeju, said the contractor was bound for New York City on Turkish Airlines and the other man was on the way to Doha, Qatar on Ethiopian Airlines.

Nnaji said the two were arrested during passengers screening on the two airlines.

It is learned Okechukwu was arrested with 1.105 kg of brownish substances and it was tested positive for heroin while Nnaji was excreted with 11.540 kg of marijuana and 490 grams of tramadol.

He confessed in a statement saying, “I am sick and in debt. I did not smuggle drugs deliberately. Since 2015, I have been living in abject poverty to the extent that I cannot take care of my family. This is the handiwork of the devil and I regret everything now.”
