Multiple explosions triggered a natural gas pipeline rupture Thursday near Boston leaving one dead and at least a dozen others injured. Hundreds of people are evacuating the place.

Buildings and homes in dozens were either engulfed in flames or demolished. Firefighters raced from one blaze to another for hours and utility crews rushed to put gas and electricity under control to prevent further ignitions.

Probably over-pressurization of a gas is suspected of the explosions, said Andover Fire Chief Michael Mansfield.

NiSource Inc. spokesman Columbia Gas said earlier today it would be upgrading the gas lines in neighborhoods in Boston.

In a released statement the spokesman said, “Columbia Gas is investigating what happened on its system today.”
