More and more Americans are lately coming out as gay on Facebook. About 800,000 users have update their profile with a same-gender attraction or custom gender in past one year.

More Americans Coming Out After Supreme Court's Same-Sex Marriage Decision

On June 26 the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in a hearing of Obergefell v. Hodges.

Facebook said the number of of people comings out is booming and it is thrice the rate compared to a year ago. It is also reported the rate of fans joining or liking LGBT-related pages have increased by 25 percent compared last year.

The search giant rolled out a custom gender identity last year in February. Facebook started tracking the coming out of users since October 11 on the National Coming Out Day.

On any day 10 percent of users are found to be changing their interest status that include gender, but on the day when Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriages, more than 20 percent of users changed their status.

Director of research and public education at Human Rights Campaign Foundation, Jay Brown, said in past one year there has been unprecedented coverage of LGBT people. It is seen people are becoming visible in their own lives.
