The two and two other NPR journalists, Tom Bowman and producer Monika Evstatieva, were traveling near Marjah in Helmand province with army convoy when their vehicle was struck.

Bowman and Evstatieva were not hurt.

Gilkey had regularly covered the Iraq and Afghanistan war for past one-and-half decade. He was committed to help general mass across the world see the wars.

Senior vice president of news and editorial director of NPR, Michael Oreskes, said Gilky helped everyone see the world and each other through his eyes.

He covered national as well as international news and had traveled several times to Iraq and Afghanistan. He had been awarded several awards including George Polk and Emmy for his work. He was the first journalist from multimedia to have received the Edward R. Murrow Award. In 2011 he was named as Still Photographer of the Year by the White House News Photographers Association.

Tamanna worked as a freelancer for the radio network.

Since 1992, from across the worlds, about 1,200 journalists have died.
