Refugees Entering EU Reaches 1 Million In 2015- Report

The figure was released on Tuesday jointly by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and UN refugee agency. Their released report revealed the irregular arrivals into Europe as of Monday totalled at 1,005,504 in 2015.

The report added vast majority of the migrants came by sea. It totalled to 971,289. Another 34,215 people traveled by land to enter Europe.

All those who traveled by sea didn’t reach their destinations. The report adds 3,695 were drowned or remained missing while attempting sailing on unseaworthy boats.

According to IOM director general William Lacy Swing, the Mediterranean has been the deadliest route for migrants in the world and last year 3,279 people lost lives attempting to cross and this accounted for 65 percent of the total deaths in 2014.

UN data reveals 219,000 migrants entered Europe in 2014 through Mediterranean.

The second-deadliest is the border of US and Mexico and 6,029 deaths have been seen on it between 1998 and 2013.

This year the number of refugees and migrants into European Union have exploded and most of them were from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia and Eritrea.
