Two Blasts Killed 100+ In Iraq's Capital Baghdad Over Weekend

The first explosion took place in Baghdad neighborhood of Karrada on Saturday that killed 125 people dead including 25 children and injuring 147 others.

The blast was massive and caused damage in adjacent buildings inside which people got trapped. A gym and a coffee shop too were damaged on the busy shopping street.

Another bomb detonation occurred at an outdoor market in the Shaab neighborhood of southeastern Baghdad that killed one and wounded five.

The ISIS militant group has taken credit of the Karrada blast saying Shiite neighborhoods were targeted.

Both the areas are predominately Shiite.

Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General (SRSG) for Iraq, Jain Kubis, said the act is heinous and cowardly that targeted peaceful civilians during the end of Ramadan month when shoppers are preparing for the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday.

In recent weeks Baghdad has been rocked by several deadly car bomb attacks and credit for most of those has been claimed by the ISIS group.

On May 17 one of the deadliest attacks occurred in Sadr City that killed 24 people and injured 71 others.

Two more bombs in al-Shaab neighborhood killed more than a dozen people and injured 44 others. Interior Ministry of the country said a female suicide bomber is suspected to have been responsible for one of the blasts.
